The Vikings were venturesome seafarers from Denmark, Norway and Sweden. They spread across Europe and the North Atlantic region in the period (800-1050 A.D.) known as the Viking Ages. Often thought of as raiders, the Vikings were in fact primarly traders, explorers and settlers. They left behind a legacy, not only of archaeological remains, but also family names and place names. Their heritage is reflected in local dialects, customs, folk tales and various traditions.
